concept
A virtual setting where simple machines interact with their environment

The premise of this project was to create a vehicle with sensitive, mechanical features. Using Braitenberg vehicles as a model, this vehicle would be a simple machine that responds to its environment.
details
Icarii was designed as a playful narrative with mechanical, toy-like characters inspired by the theories and drawings of Valentino Braitenberg. The Greek myth of the young boy whose wings melted when he flew too close to the sun provides a great allegory for simple, insect-like machines that would likewise be attracted to light. Virtual mechanical parts add the characteristic of functioning wings. During programming, I designed the code to emulate the nature of wing action, rather than just of direct movement.
result
This is a program that explores playful chaos, using the Icarus myth to connect users to the game’s main action. The five flying creatures are drawn to the sun, yet repelled by the clouds. Their plight creates a unique and interesting environment to observe.
